In the small town of Hadley, Massachusetts, a mother and daughter have gone missing, and all signs point to the mother’s abusive, alcoholic boyfriend as the culprit. After a weeks-long, active investigation, however, local and state police come up empty and the boyfriend walks away, a free man.

Ten years pass by, and FBI Assistant Director Marvin Ledds happens to be passing through the area when he reads a local newspaper story about the tenth anniversary of the women’s disappearance. Their fates left unknown, the assistant director decides that he has just the man—and just the woman—to look into this heartbreaking mystery.
